He was educated at Selwyn College, Cambridge〔“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 and ordained after a period of study at Ripon College Cuddesdon in 1935.〔Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941〕 He was Curate of All Saints, Wokingham〔(Church web-site )〕 then Precentor of Norwich Cathedral until 1955. He then held Norfolk incumbencies in Norwich and Great Yarmouth before becoming a Canon Residentiary at Norwich Cathedral,a post he held until elevation to the Gloucester Deanery in 1972- a post he held for a decade.
